The holiday season is magic, but packing that magic up and transporting it across states (or the country!) with the whole family can feel more like a marathon than a merry trip. Delayed flights, traffic snarls, and over-tired little ones are the reality of peak travel season.
But fear not! With a little planning and the right mindset, your family journey can be less "jingle bells, screaming all the way" and more "silent night, holy sleep."
Here are our top tips for families traveling together this holiday season:
1. Prioritize Comfort (Seriously!)
Travel days are long. Invest in items that make transit comfortable for everyone, from your little one to Grandpa.
The Right Gear: For flights and long car rides, a premium travel pillow that supports the neck and chin is a game-changer. Our Wander Pillow, for instance, ensures everyone arrives rested, not cranky. Consider a matching set to make the kids feel like they're part of the "travel crew!"
Layer Up: Dress everyone in soft, comfortable layers. This allows you to adapt instantly to a stuffy plane cabin or a sudden drop in temperature on a road trip pit stop.
Keep Essentials Close: Designate a specific carry-on for essentials: medicine, a change of clothes (for everyone, just in case!), wipes, and, of course, the travel pillows.

2. Master the Art of the Pre-Plan
A rigid schedule won't work, but a proactive plan will save your sanity.
Pad Your Time: Assume everything will take longer than expected. Add 30 minutes to your estimate for security, bathroom breaks, and inevitable meltdowns. Being early is relaxing; rushing is stressful.
Talk it Out: Discuss the itinerary with older kids. Let them know how long the flight/drive is, what the expected stops are, and what the rules are for screen time. Setting expectations minimizes surprises.
Have a Backup: For flights, know the next available option if your first leg is delayed. For car trips, have a few alternative, kid-friendly stops mapped out.
3. Entertainment & Snacking Strategy
Occupy the stomach and the mind to prevent boredom and hangriness the two biggest travel culprits.
The Travel Activity Kit: Pack a small backpack for each child filled with non-electronic entertainment: coloring books, novel activities saved just for the trip, card games, or audiobooks.
Snack Attack: Skip the expensive airport food and pack plenty of favorite snacks. Include a mix of healthy options and special treats. Hydration is key bring empty water bottles and fill them up after security.
Screen Time as a Reward: If you use electronics, use them strategically. Maybe no screens until 2 hours into the flight, or until after the first scheduled car stop.
4. Remember the "Togetherness" Goal
The purpose of all this travel is to connect. Don't lose sight of the big picture.
Schedule Downtime: The holidays are busy! Make sure to build in periods where the family can simply rest, relax, or have unstructured play time without a schedule.
Let Go of Perfection: Things will go wrong. Your luggage might get delayed. Someone will spill juice. Pack your patience and sense of humor. Your reaction to the problem is what determines the overall experience.
Involve the Kids: Give older kids small, manageable responsibilities, like being in charge of their own carry-on or choosing the next car game. This makes them feel like a valuable part of the team.
This year, make your holiday journey a comfortable prelude to the celebration. A little preparation and the right gear will ensure your family arrives happy, rested, and ready to enjoy the precious time together!
Happy and Safe Travels!
